I travel quite a bit. Even cutting back on travel, I’m still gone often enough that I worry about being away from my small people. And I worry that my husband is carrying the load of, well, everything.
I’m in charge of all-things-school and just about all-things-house…. so, when I’m gone, I worry that I may have missed passing off the right information: Tuesday is a ‘dress-down’ (out of uniform) day, Thursday is Show-and-tell, Friday is Pizza Day…oh and the day we owe money for school t-shirts. Are you getting my drift?
Are you getting that I’m a worrier?
So I do whatever I can to make things easier on WHOMEVER is helping out with the small people (salute of gratitude heading in the direction of my in-laws – mother, father AND brother, my husband (of course) and our neighbors and friends!) while I’m gone.
So, before I leave, I make a few meals that my husband can have with the kids, I leave a detailed letter with all that school jabberwocky and? I do this:
I pre-package all the food the kids might use for school lunches: lunch meat, cheese, grapes, apples, pretzels, crackers, cookies…. and then the KIDS know to grab the right baggies to pack THIER OWN lunches in the morning. Thereby saving my husband or in-laws that extra step.
A silly little thing, I know. But it makes me feel like I’ve made my time away just a little easier on everyone, I’m giving the kids some independence – they are doing lunches BY THEMSELVES, and the side bonus – I’ve found the preparation makes life so much easier, I’m even doing it all when I’m home now too.
This is saving me at least 10-15 minutes in the morning. And if you had ever been here while we do our am-chaos-dance, you would know this is a very good thing.
Is there anything you do before you head out of town to make the transition a little easier?
