Prevent the Summer Slide: Keep Kids Focused with Summer #BrainQuest

Twenty-five.

The exact number of days my small people have left of school before Summer takes over and their days are consumed by sunshine, friendship, playing outside and their favorite camps.

Wait….did I mention there will be a bit of learning in there too? I know, I know…I’m a mean mom, but every Summer since Delaney and Cooper started school, I’ve made sure their minds stayed active even while enjoying our favorite season.

Did you know ‘Summer Slide’ is a real thing? This means that most students lose about two months of grade level equivalency in math, and many also lose reading achievement while home for the Summer. Trust me when I tell you I love this season, more than most – and I know my kiddos are a huge fan of the mental break from school, but I have never wanted them to return in August or September WITHOUT all of their knowledge from the previous year.

That’s why I’m partnering with my friends at Workman Publishing to share their brand new series Summer Brain Quest. Just released on April 18th, the workbooks combat ‘summer slide’ in kids between kindergarten and sixth grade. Summer Brain Quest comes from the same publisher as our favorite Big Fat Notebooks.

The series is unique as it offers personalized learning for the strengths, personalities and style for every type of child. While making their way through the workbooks, they can both focus on the fundamentals and enjoy the process because they are in charge.

Each book is designed for the summer in between two grade levels – for kids between kindergarten and first grade, first and second…all the way through fifth and sixth. These books all include a pull-out map that guides each summer student on a quest to learn.

They follow their path, earning stickers for completing pages and heading outside for additional activities. The map gives kids the option to choose different avenues, following the subjects that they love the most (maybe more hands-on science or extra math problems?) They also have the option to skip sections in the book – jumping around to satisfy their own curiosity.
