Laundry is one of those chores we’ll never be able to get away from. We’ll always need clean clothes. But there are ways to make it easier and less expensive. I’ve put together ten laundry hacks that will leave you wondering why you never thought of these earlier!
10 Laundry Hacks You Need to Know
Keep your laundry soap in drink dispenser
Ditch the container your liquid laundry soap came in. Get a glass drink dispenser and empty the soap into it. Not only will this help with messy lids, but it is a great help to people who have problems lifting. It also makes your laundry area look so much nicer! (Consider organizing your laundry area with a little style).
Baking soda and lemon help get rid of sweat stains
Getting sweat stains on clothes can be a huge annoyance. Thankfully, just because the armpits have yellowed, doesn’t mean you have to toss out the shirt. Make a paste out of baking soda and lemon, then use a toothbrush to rub the mixture into the fabric. Let it sit for 5 – 10 minutes before rinsing out. Reapply and repeat the cycle a couple times. Toss in your washer and enjoy as your favorite shirt is saved! (And Sports Moms and Dads – this is the magic I use to clean white baseball pants!)
Keep chalk and baby powder close at hand
Ever feared you ruined a shirt while cooking dinner? That grease or oil splatter can feel like the death of a favorite clothing item. Fortunately, with this super simple laundry hack, I don’t have to worry about my clothes as well. If you do get grease on your clothes, take them off and apply chalk or baby powder to the stained area. Let it sit overnight so the powder can draw the oil out of your clothes. Toss it in the laundry. Another stain crisis fixed.
No dryer sheets, no problem
What happens when you are ready to throw a load of laundry into the dryer and realize you’re out of dryer sheets? Not to worry – Grab yourself a small towel and pour some liquid fabric softener onto it. Toss it in with the clothes and it will help disperse the liquid during its cycle.
Aluminum foil works on static too
No liquid fabric softener on hand either? Still, no worries! Static cling is still no problem. Crumple a piece of aluminum foil into a ball and toss it right in with your wet clothes. It will bounce around while your dryer is running and help to reduce and remove the static from your fabrics.
Vinegar works wonders on musty smells
Sometimes you need a little something extra to get the musty smell out of towels. Sure, there are expensive soaps to tackle the problem, but skip those and save your money. The simple hack of adding two cups of white vinegar to your wash will remove the smell. You have to love an easy hack that includes an item you likely already have sitting around.
Ice cubes are the real MVP here
Didn’t get to your dryer in time and now everything is cold and wrinkly? No worries! Toss a couple ice cubes into the dryer and turn it on for a timed cycle of 20 – 30 minutes. The ice cubes will melt and the water will mix in with your clothes. That little bit of moisture will bring your clothes back to life and get rid of all those unwanted wrinkles.
Pool noodles cut down on creasing
Air drying is a perfect way to cut down on using electricity (which is great for your bill). It is also the way you simply have to dry some clothes. Drying racks would be awesome if it wasn’t for them leaving creases in your clothes that you eventually need to iron out. Skip all that with the help of a pool noodle! Cut your pool noodle down to the length of the drying rod you want it to rest on. Once it’s the right size, cut it in half the long way. Now you have enough to set them on two of the rods. By draping your clothes over the curved noodle, it will prevent creases from happening.
Hang lost socks that are looking for a match
Are you routinely coming up with single socks that have lost their match? Glue magnets onto clothes pins. When you have a solo sock, pin it to the dryer. That way when it shows up in a different load, you know right where the match is and it can be put away as a pair.
Tackle the gunk on your iron
A quick and easy way to clean your iron is with a laundry room staple – a dryer sheet. This is a perfect way to get multiple uses out of the same product. After it’s gone through the dryer, save it to clean your iron. Put your iron on the lowest setting. Once it’s warm, rub it against the used dryer sheet. Any gunk that was on your iron will transfer on the dryer sheet.
These are my favorites…do you have any to add to the list?
