Grocery shopping does not top the list of my favorite things to do, but I’m probably in our local market at least three times a week just for more fresh fruits and vegetables. If you must know, I really have to go back every few days just to keep my home stocked with oranges. Each time I buy them, I purchase between 15-20 at a time. I’m not kidding.
My family eats oranges like candy. We sometimes go through as many as 4 a day. I know this is a good thing., but it still amazes me. (and I do wish I could have them delivered)
Here’s a little something you might not know – it is actually citrus season right now. Yes, as I type, ’tis the season for the those lovely orange fruits to make themselves known and enjoyed. I know we often associate oranges with summertime, but now, as the temperatures are a bit cooler is actually peak season.
Take Advantage of Citrus Season: Add Oranges to Your Diet
Did you know: Orange trees were first planted in Florida in 1513 by Juan Ponce de Leon and now that state produces about 70% of our country’s crop. And about 90% of THAT crop is then used for….you guessed it… producing juice.
They are a Powerfood: Oranges contain a natural simple sugar, and many vitamins including Vitamin C, Vitamin A, potassium, calcium and even a certain amount of fiber.
Pick the best: Since I’m suggesting you start stocking your fridge with oranges, I don’t want you to be indiscriminate – do be choosy. Look for oranges that are firm, ones that seem to fall on the heavier side for their size and avoid any that have obvious damage.
Consider the citrus alternative: Maybe you don’t love oranges, but this time of year – citrus season – is definitely the time of year to experiment with other fruits in this department. Consider tangerines, blood oranges, clementines (another favorite in my home) or even tangelos.
Happy citrus season!
