I know this for a fact. I have seen evidence with my very own eyes.
It was in church this past Sunday – it was the simplest of gestures, but, it really touched me. The middle aged couple in front of me were sitting shoulder to shoulder. At one point, he reached over and grabbed her hand. It was a sweet moment. For some reason, seeing a tender exchange between couples who have clearly been together for a long time has always struck me as a little bit of magic. Suddenly this man leaned away and shrugged off his coat. I was a little surprised because it actually felt a bit chilly in our section of the church – almost like the air conditioning was on. But, he didn’t take his coat off because he was hot – he took it off because she was cold. He pulled his arms out and wrapped the coat softly around her shoulders. I can’t tell you the last time I saw something like this. I mean, when was the last time a man (not a maitre d) pulled a chair out for a woman? When was the last time I saw a man open a woman’s car door for her? This gentleman didn’t give her his coat because he had to. He did it because he wanted to.
This morning, my husband did a little something special for me – and in my world, this was even better than opening my car door or offering me his jacket.
My loving, but mostly ‘unromantic’ husband left me a wonderful note of encouragement on my computer. (I actually thought it was a ‘honey-do’ note!) He wanted me to know he supports me and believes in me. I needed to hear that. I’m chalk full of long days, lack of sleep, sibling rivalry and the like. It was short, but sweet.
I haven’t even been married for a decade, but I know it takes effort and love to keep your relationship strong. I want to be the couple holding hands into our latter years.
P.S. This fabulous picture was taken by my very favorite San Diego photographer: Carey at Barefoot Memories
