I will admit, I fall into the category of people who think Chris Brown did not deserve to be on the Grammy stage last night. That honor should be reserved for people who posses not only talent, but character. The artists I want my children to see as role models are the ones who deserve a spot at that table.
Not spoiled, narcissistic (albeit talented) artists who abuse women, throw public tantrums and leave destruction in their wake.
And yet, he’s there because people are still buying his records. And because, despite his many, many character flaws, he is somehow appealing. He performed not once, but twice at the Grammy Awards last night. And by putting him on a pedestal, society unwittingly condones his truly unacceptable behavior.
And as if that wasn’t horrendous enough…. I saw this tweeted last night by Cecily and followed the link:
It is a link to ’25 Extremely Upsetting Reactions To Chris Brown At The Grammys’ over on BuzzFeed. Tragically, they all include some version of, “well Chris Brown could beat me any time he wanted”.
My thoughts:
I’ll end by saying this: I know that post has been everywhere today and I’m certain any one of those girls has been given some…let’s call it….feedback? I don’t think they are stupid or worthless. As I said in the video, I’m sure there is some element of ‘joke’ in their words.
But it just isn’t funny. Chris Brown isn’t funny.
And I don’t think domestic abuse is a topic that we can afford to put on our joke list. This is too serious. It is too important. We should be standing up AGAINST what someone like Chris Brown represents, rather than praising him for a talent he is hiding behind.
