If you ask my small people to name their favorite holiday, it is likely to be a toss-up between Christmas and Halloween.
Naturally, Christmas brings with it the holiday spirit, the opportunity to give to others, and of course, a few of those brightly wrapped presents tucked under the tree…you know the ones that just may have their name written on them?
But Halloween is something else entirely. Rather than being a ‘family event’….this one feels like a celebration of friendship and, as they get a little older, of snippets of freedom. My small people moved from being walked to each neighbor’s door, to running a few houses ahead and now being allowed to do a little trick or treating on their own.
It is giggles and goblins, witches and warlocks and most definitely – costumes and candy.
When I was a little girl, I would dump my stash the minute I arrived home and make piles of my absolute favorites. My kids do a little of that, but they know I’m looking over their shoulder at the avalanche of candy they simply don’t need.
They don’t need the sugar and I don’t need piles of candy sitting on top of my fridge for months to come or the crush that comes with too much of the sweet stuff.
The good news? Once a select group of favorites has been squirreled away, it IS possible for all the extras to magically disappear overnight.
A spritely elf, Holly flies from home to home in the days following Halloween and collects the mountains of candy your small people and mine simply don’t need. And she delivers it to a special group that is energized by the leftover sweetness: Santa’s Elves.
Who knew, right?
In a book that tells her story, Halloween Holly discovers one of the North Pole’s best kept secrets – the elves we have long relied upon to make toys and help Santa prepare for the magic of Christmas are magically moved to top level productivity by candy.
An extra bonus? Your kiddos will be helping Santa’s elves and getting in the holiday spirit just a little early.
Disclosure: I was not compensated for this post, but was gifted a Halloween Holly kit.
