I’m laughing. I was actually starting to post this on Facebook. Or Twitter. And just HOPE you took the time to listen to it. But I changed my mind. There is no guarantee you’ll come all the way over here and take this extra time to read a few more sentences of introduction, but I hope you will.
We’ve become such a culture of ‘soudbites, of microblogging, of give-it-to-me-now-and-make-it-quick, that I was going to try to put this incredible man’s words in just 140-characters, but I couldn’t. At least I couldn’t if I had any HOPE of doing him justice.
This is Joss Whedon. You might know him as the writer and director of The Avengers or the creator of Buffy, The Vampire Slayer.
But there are hundreds of reporters that know him as that guy who creates ‘really strong female characters’.
In this video, he talks about how he responded to the question of WHY he creates characters like that – the first time…and the tenth, and the 17th and the 48th.
And when he started to say, “Equality is NOT a concept….it is not something we should be striving for….” I found myself holding my breath.
You know we need more Joss Whedon’s in the world, don’t you? Take a few minutes of your day to listen. (If nothing else, start at 2:30 and keep going….)
Tell me….that was worth a few minutes, right?
Let’s hope the novelty of ‘strong women characters’ will one day disappear.
Say it again, Joss.
